My comic shop went from 4 long boxes of back issues to just 1 in about 2 years and I hate it
I go to Galaxy Comics here in Portland every couple months and the back issue section keeps shrinking. Two years ago there were 4 long boxes of stuff you could actually dig through. Now there is 1. I asked the owner Dave what happened and he said he sells way more trades and single new issues now, so keeping old floppies around just eats floor space. But here is the thing I don't get. Half the fun of being a comic fan is digging. Finding a random issue 12 of something you never heard of for 2 bucks. That feeling is gone. Now it's all new releases on the wall and a couple shelves of trades. I get it, he has to pay rent, but it feels like the hobby lost a whole part of itself. Anybody else seeing their local shop gut the back issue bins, or is this just a Portland thing?
Man that stinks. I hit up a few shops around here and two of them did the same thing, so it's not just Portland. But here's what bugs me about Dave's answer, does he actually know the old floppies are dead weight, or did he just stop restocking them and then act surprised when nobody dug through the same beat up boxes for two years? Like a back issue bin only works if new stuff keeps cycling in, otherwise of course it sits there. Did he try dollar bins or putting them out at cons before he gave up on it? Feels like a lot of owners blame the format when the real problem is they quit putting any effort into it.
