The con floor argument that flipped my whole pull list

Was at the Midwest Comic Expo in Chicago last month and overheard two fans debating the current run of a book I'd written off years ago. One guy had the actual issues and was showing how the artist's panel layouts told a parallel story to the dialogue, which I never noticed when I skimmed it digitally. I used to think print vs digital was a money thing, but after seeing him flip pages and point out the gutters, I realized the pacing just hits different on paper. Now I'm back to grabbing floppies for anything with a complex artist, and my wallet is crying, but the reading experience is way better. Anyone else had a physical copy change their mind on a series they'd dismissed?

That gutter point is exactly what got me too. I wrote off a book after reading it on a tablet and thought the story was flat, then grabbed a cheap back issue at a con and realized the artist was using the page turns to hide reveals. Now I buy physical for any book where the art is doing heavy lifting. My rule now is if the art has a lot of small details or weird panel shapes, I wait for the trade or floppies. Saves my wallet from the hype books, but I still end up spending more than I planned most months.
