Warning: the dealer at my first con in Pittsburgh ruined variant covers for me
Was at Steel City Con back in 2019 and this older collector kept telling every kid in line that variants were the only books worth money, so they all skipped the dollar bins full of actual good reads. It bugs me how much of this hobby now feels like people arguing about which cover is rarer instead of which story hits harder. Anyone else get into comics through cheap back issues and still think the speculator stuff is killing the fun?
The dollar bins were never full of "actual good reads" for everyone, lots of us got hooked on cheap books that happened to have cool covers too. Blaming one dealer for how the whole hobby works seems like a stretch.
