A client's throwaway line about power strips made me rethink my whole surge setup

Last Tuesday I was swapping out a dead PSU for a client in Tulsa, and he casually said he unplugs everything during storms because his dad lost a whole home theater to a lightning surge back in 2003. That got me thinking about how many cheap power strips I've installed over the years, and I started checking the joule ratings on the ones I use for my own equipment. Turns out three of my five strips were rated under 400 joules, which is basically nothing for a real surge. I spent about $80 replacing them with units that have 2000+ joules and a connected equipment warranty, and I'm planning to check every strip I touch on service calls going forward. How often do you guys actually verify surge protection specs, or do you just trust whatever is on the shelf at the hardware store?
