Dropped $180 on a 'smart' PSU tester that lied to me on 3 jobs
Bought a digital power supply tester back in March because I got tired of hauling my multimeter to every house call. It passed a Corsair unit that was sagging hard under load, so I swapped the board instead of the PSU and the customer's rig died again 2 days later in front of him. Lost the $180 on the tester plus a $90 return trip and a bad review in Beaverton. Anybody got a load tester that won't fake me out, or am I stuck carrying the old brick forever?
Man, hate to say it but the tester wasn't lying to you, it just wasn't doing the one job you needed. Those little digital units pretty much only check if the rails are alive and close to spec with no load on them, which is nothing like a real PC pulling 400 watts. A Corsair can read perfect 12v on a bench tester and still fold the second you load it up with a GPU. That's why the old brick and a multimeter still win, you check voltage while the thing is actually running hard. You need either a real load tester with adjustable draw or just test in the customer's machine under stress. The $180 tester is fine for a quick sanity check before you install a unit, but it never could have caught a sag under load.
