Got a call about a slow office PC and ended up comparing two thermal paste methods

A client in Springfield brought in a desktop that kept shutting down under load. I cleaned off the old paste and tried the pea-sized dot method first, but temps were still hitting 85C under a stress test. Then I switched to the thin spread method with a plastic card, and the idle temp dropped by 12 degrees right away. The full load test stayed under 70C after that. Anyone have a strong preference for one method over the other on modern CPUs?

That thin spread method is a game changer, I had the same results last week.

Read a tech article that said the pea method can leave gaps on larger heat spreaders. The thin spread makes sure every bit of the surface gets covered. Seems like it matters more with these bigger modern CPUs.
