I just lost a whole afternoon because I didn't verify the power supply before swapping a motherboard.
Spent 4 hours replacing a board on a Dell Optiplex only to find the original, flaky PSU was the culprit, and now I have to eat the cost of the new part.

My buddy spent a grand on a new alternator... it was just a loose belt.

Happens all the time with car repairs too. I've seen people replace a whole starter when it was just a bad ground wire the whole time. That feeling of wasted time and money is the worst, especially when the fix was simple. Makes you triple-check everything the next time.
