Just hit 1000 successful data recoveries from failed drives this year

I was cleaning up my service logs and the counter hit exactly 1000, which is way more than I expected by October. Some techs say chasing every recovery is a waste of time on clearly dead hardware, but I think the practice builds skills you can't get otherwise. Where do you guys draw the line on trying to save data versus calling it a total loss?

My buddy had a drive that made that classic clicking sound. Everyone told him it was toast, total loss. He kept it powered off in a drawer for like two years. Found some guy online who did a platter swap in his garage. Got every single family photo back. Changed his whole view on "dead" hardware.

My line is when the smoke clears and the data's still gone.
