PSA: Don't cheap out on PSUs like I did, lost a whole build

I thought I was being smart saving $40 on a no-name power supply from Amazon. It worked fine for about 6 months, then one night I heard a pop and smelled smoke. Woke up to a dead PC, fried my motherboard, GPU, and SSD. That cheap PSU killed about $800 worth of parts in my custom build. I was so mad at myself for not spending the extra cash on a quality unit from a known brand like EVGA or Corsair. Now I only buy 80+ Gold rated PSUs with good reviews, it's just not worth the risk. Has anyone else learned this lesson the hard way like me?

Yep, I learned that one the hard way too. My cheap PSU didn't even have the decency to pop, it just silently died and took my hard drive with it. Nothing like paying $50 to save $20.

Read a post on r/buildapc last week where a guy's cheap power supply actually caught fire mid game. Scary stuff. Learned from a Linus Tech Tips video that those cheap units often skip safety features like over voltage protection. Not worth saving 30 bucks when it can fry your whole rig.
