Spent 2 hours chasing a ghost on a Dell Latitude before I checked the power adapter wattage
Client swore the laptop was fine and I believed him, since it powered on and booted at his office, so I tore apart the DC jack and reseated the RAM before it hit me to check the brick he handed me, which was a 45W unit on a machine that wants 65W and was throttling itself to a crawl under any real load, so what is your go to first check when a machine acts possessed but tests clean on the bench?
So when you say it booted fine at his office, did you actually see it under load or was it just idling on the desktop? That part matters a lot because a 45W brick will happily power a boot and sit there looking normal until the CPU tries to do anything. How long did you run it before you started pulling the thing apart, and did you ever hook a meter to the adapter to see what it was actually putting out? I'm curious if it was a straight 45W unit or one of those sketchy third party bricks that lies on the label too. Because if the label was lying you'd chase that same ghost twice as long next time.
