I spent 2 months floating slabs with a straight magnesium float before a guy in Fresno asked why I hated flat floors
Back in March I was finishing a 40x60 shop pad out near Fresno and a retired finisher walked by and watched me run a straight mag float over the whole thing. He asked if I owned a big blue float and I said no, figured a mag was a mag. That night I looked it up and realized a 4 foot bull float with a slight bow does the bulk of the work in a fraction of the time, and I had been killing my shoulders for nothing. So here is the argument I keep having with myself. Half of me says learn the basics with hand tools first, earn the bull float. Other half says that is just hazing and I cost myself two months of sore arms and wavy slabs. Which side do you land on, and did anybody else have a moment where a tool you skipped turned out to be the whole job?
