Kept adding water to my mix for 2 years, then a finisher in Fort Worth asked one question
I was finishing a 12x20 slab last Tuesday and it started setting up on me way too fast, so I did what I always do and splashed more water in the wheelbarrow. Guy on the crew named Ray watched me do it and just asked how much water I put in at the plant. Turns out I had been adding water to batches that were already mixed wet, and that's why my slabs kept getting those hairline cracks and dusting on top. He showed me how to check slump with a cone instead of just eyeballing it, and I felt pretty dumb standing there. Anybody got a good way to explain to the batch plant guy what slump I actually want without it turning into a whole argument?
Water is the devil for concrete, plain and simple. Tell the batch guy you want a 4 inch slump and dont let him talk you into 6 just cause its easier to pour. If he pushes back just say the last few loads set up too fast and you had to add water on site, which killed your finish. Standing there with a slump cone before you sign the ticket settles most of that argument real quick.
