Just realized I had to pick between two ways to handle the moon landing hoax argument at a family dinner

My cousin brought it up again at Thanksgiving in Chicago, and I could either try to debunk every point with NASA photos or just ask why he thinks that. I went with the question route. He actually paused for a minute and said 'I guess I just don't trust the government.' It shifted the whole vibe from a fight to a real talk. Anyone else find asking 'why' works better than listing facts with true believers?

That reminds me of a podcast about changing minds.

Listen to that podcast, @joelgrant. The best trick is to ask questions about their reasons, not just state your own facts. It gets people to explain their own thinking, and sometimes they spot the holes themselves. I've used that when talking to family about stuff they read online.
