Overheard a guy at the hardware store saying all conspiracy theories start with a half-truth and a full ego

I was grabbing some hinges and this older dude was telling his buddy about how the whole "chemtrails" thing got him into researching government overreach, and then he said that line about half-truths and full egos. Made me think about how I've seen that play out in this community, you know? Someone finds one real fact about something secret, then builds a whole tower of assumptions on it without checking the next step. Has anyone here ever traced a conspiracy theory back to that one tiny true detail that got blown way out of proportion?

Read a post once saying the moon landing hoax started with a real anomaly in a photo.

@margaretrivera yeah and I bet the real anomaly was someone's brain working too hard.
