Pro tip: reading the actual bill text killed 3 conspiracies I used to believe
Got sucked into a rabbit hole about a local zoning bill after a guy at a Seattle city council meeting handed me a 4 page printout, and every wild claim online fell apart by page 2. Now I check the source doc before I share anything, but does anyone have a system for verifying stuff that's hard to find in print?
Wish I had a system, but honestly I used to be the guy sharing those wild claims with zero shame. I once spent a whole lunch break arguing with some dude about a city budget thing, then actually pulled up the PDF and found out I was dead wrong by page one. Idk, maybe the real trick is just being willing to look dumb when the source says you are. Half the battle is finding the dang document though, because some of these agencies bury it three links deep on a site from 2009. So yeah, I check the source now, but my method is basically just stubborn clicking and hoping the search bar works.
