Warning: I spent $300 on a bunker's worth of canned beans for a 'grid down' scenario

My basement flooded last month and now I'm just a guy with 200 soggy bean cans. Anyone else have a prep purchase that totally backfired?

Okay but how likely is a total grid collapse really? I see people buying all this stuff for doomsday, but most emergencies are way more boring, like a bad storm or a power outage for a few days. A basement flood seems way more common than the end of the world. Maybe we should prep for the Tuesday problems, not the zombie apocalypse ones.

Yeah, but where's the line between a Tuesday problem and a bigger collapse? Is it two weeks without power, or two months? I've seen neighborhoods go dark for over a week after an ice storm and it got pretty rough for folks without a backup plan.
