Warning: Tried that 'home water testing kit' from Amazon and got some scary results
Honestly, I bought a 15 dollar testing kit off Amazon last week just to check my tap water for lead. I followed the instructions exactly, dipped the strip in my kitchen sink water for 10 seconds. The strip showed a high level of something called 'total dissolved solids' that I didn't even know was a thing. Now I'm wondering if those cheap kits are even legit or if I just scared myself for no reason. Has anyone else tried one and compared it to a professional lab test?

That 'total dissolved solids' reading is actually just measuring mineral content like calcium, not dangerous stuff.

Funny enough, I used to think TDS readings meant something dirty or dangerous was swimming in the water. Like high numbers meant lead or chemicals or something scary. But you're totally right, it's mostly just calcium and magnesium (hard water stuff) that pushes those numbers up. I had a friend with a TDS meter freak out over 400 ppm, and it turned out his water was just loaded with good minerals. Actually changed my whole view on those little gadgets, now I just use them to see if my filter is doing its job.
