A homeowner's 2 a.m. text fixed my whole bid process

I used to just guess on labor hours for kitchen remodels. Last month a client in Boise sent me a text at 2 a.m. saying my estimate felt padded and she wanted an itemized breakdown. I sat down and realized I was adding 15% fluff on every line out of habit. Now I price each task by the actual time I log on similar jobs. Has anyone else had a customer call them out and it actually made their estimates cleaner?

The whole "padded" thing is just part of doing business sometimes. You're not running a charity, and that 15% covers the days when things go sideways and you eat a day of labor. One late night text from a customer who probably googled "how to negotiate with a contractor" isn't exactly a wake up call, it's just one person's opinion. Itemizing everything sounds great on paper, but it also means every tiny change order becomes a fight about what's "fair." I've seen guys do that and then spend more time emailing back and forth than actually working. You're never going to make every client happy, and chasing that just adds stress. If logging your time makes you feel more confident, fine, but don't act like the old way was wrong. It covered your risk. That 2 a.m. text probably saved her a few bucks and cost you a headache later. Honestly, you might be overthinking this.
