Chose a flat fee over hourly for a basement reno last August...
Picked the flat fee because I thought it'd be simpler, but after three change orders on the electrical and plumbing, I ended up losing about $800 on labor I didn't account for upfront.

Hate to be that guy but change orders are exactly why flat fee contracts need a scope of work that's ironclad upfront. Sounds like the real issue was leaving wiggle room in the original agreement, not the fee structure itself.

Totally agree with you @victor219, I got burned the same way on a kitchen reno because we skimped on the scope details. Learned the hard way that ironclad upfront work is everything.
