Client told me my framing was overengineered until the next storm hit
Last fall I had a homeowner in Tampa tell me I was wasting money with hurricane ties on a shed roof. Said I was just padding the bill. Two months later Hurricane Milton rolled through and his neighbor's identical shed ended up in the pool. He called me back to build a replacement and didn't question a single extra brace. Did any of you ever have a customer push back on code stuff only to come around later?

Well, I've learned that most folks don't understand building codes until something blows apart. You just have to be firm and explain the reasoning behind each brace or tie, even if it feels like arguing. And honestly, I'd rather lose a job now than get a call at 2 AM about someone's roof flying off.

That part about "explain the reasoning behind each brace or tie" really hits home. It's the same in a lot of things, really. People want to know why, not just what to do. If you take the time to walk someone through it step by step, they usually get on board. It's a pain sometimes, but it saves a ton of headaches later.
