I used to think a cheap paint sprayer was fine for small jobs, but a rental changed my mind
Last month, I had to paint the exterior trim on a two-story house in Eugene. I usually use my old, basic sprayer for stuff like that, but it was in the shop. I rented a Graco Magnum X5 from the local supply house, thinking it would just be a minor upgrade. The difference was huge. That thing laid down a smooth, even coat in half the time, with almost no spitting or clogging. I finished the whole job in one day instead of two, and the finish looked so much better. The rental cost me $65 for the day, but I saved that much in labor time alone. Now I'm looking at buying a better sprayer for my crew. Has anyone else made the switch from a basic model to a mid-range one and seen a real jump in quality?

My crew in Spokane tried a rental Graco last year for a big fence job. Honestly, we went back to our cheaper sprayers the next week. The time we saved on spraying was lost to cleaning and breaking down that heavier unit. For our kind of quick, messy jobs, the extra hassle just wasn't worth it for us.

That line about time lost to cleaning is something most folks don't factor in when they're chasing speed.

Totally get that. Cleaning those big sprayers is a nightmare that eats up any time you saved. Had a similar thing happen with a pump we rented for moving gear. Fancy tools sometimes create more work than they solve. If your jobs are fast and messy, simple gear you can just hose down makes way more sense. Sticking with what lets your crew move quick is the right call.
