Old roofer told me to never nail shingles too tight and he was right

Last summer I was doing a small shed roof and hammered the nails flush like I always did. The next day I saw three shingles cracked right at the nail head. Called up that retired roofer I know and he said leave a 1/16 gap for expansion. Fixed it on the second try and no cracks since. Any other tips from old timers that actually work?

Three cracked shingles doesn't really sound like a big enough deal to get worked up over honestly lol

That nail gap trick saved me too, really wish I learned it sooner.
