Showerthought: general contractors keep saying you need a huge web budget, but a plain one page site got me 14 calls last month
I run a two man crew out in Fort Wayne and for a long time I bought into the idea that you have to throw money at ads and fancy web design to get found. Last October I paid a guy $600 to strip my old 8 page site down to one page with my number, my service area, and about 9 photos of finished jobs. That is it. Since then I have gotten around 14 calls a month off it, which is more than I ever got from the $250 a month I was lighting on fire before. The thing folks keep getting wrong is thinking a big site makes you look more legit, but most homeowners just want to see your number and whether you show up on time. I track it with a little notebook, nothing fancy, asking every caller how they found me. Now I am not saying ads never work, your mileage may vary depending on your trade and your town. Has anyone else gone the other way and cut their site down, or am I just lucky with how people search around here?
$600 for a one pager is a steal compared to $250 a month forever, so the math alone makes sense. Curious how you're tracking those 14 calls though, since the notebook part caught my eye. Do you ask every single caller point blank how they found you, or just the ones who seem chatty? And of the 14 a month, how many actually turn into booked jobs versus tire kickers? That ratio is the part nobody ever talks about when they brag on cheap sites.
