I picked up that taping first gives a smoother finish, while others say just mudding over gaps is fine, so how do you handle it?

Yeah I was in the "just mud it" camp for years, honestly. But then I tried taping first on a small repair, and the lack of cracks months later sold me. It's a few extra minutes that saves a callback later, which is worth it to me.

That "lack of cracks" point cole_barnes20 made is so true. I was the same way, but seeing the long-term fix changed my mind completely.
