Spent 4 hours tracking down a ghost voltage on a switch leg that turned out to be a bad neutral splice
A $15 Ideal voltage tester lit up like a Christmas tree on a dead circuit, then I blew another hour triple-checking everything before finding a loose wire nut that was barely touching in the box behind a ceiling fan - has anyone else had a meter lie to them for that long?

Man that's brutal, did your meter show voltage on the bad neutral BEFORE you found the loose splice?

Voltage? Sure, it showed voltage. Showed me a nice 47 volts between neutral and ground like it was doing me a favor. Real helpful, just not the kind of voltage that actually tells you anything useful. By the time I found the splice, I'd already replaced a perfectly good outlet and blamed the dog for the flickering lights. At least the meter was consistent - wrong, but consistent.
