That $150 spray foam kit damn near ruined my crawl space

Bought one of those DIY froth packs last month to seal up some rim joists in my house in Columbus. Followed the video to the letter but the mix ratio was off, it never cured right and trapped moisture behind it. Pulled it out this weekend, had to rent a special scraper and replan the whole job. Anyone else get burned by the big box store versions of this stuff?

My buddy in Cincinnati tried the same thing last summer, swore he mixed it for a full two minutes but it still came out like sticky taffy that never hardened. He ended up having to cut it out with a sawzall and the smell hung around his basement for weeks, like burnt chemical popcorn. He said the temperature was fine, the can was warm, everything looked right on the video, but it just glooped everywhere and dripped down his vents. Now he just tells people to hire the pros or use the rigid foam boards instead, less mess and you can actually see what you're doing. I dunno, sometimes those kits feel like a gamble with worse odds than the lottery.

Swear I went through the exact same mess last fall, ended up peeling chunks of that goo off my garage floor with a putty knife for like two days straight. Those kits are straight garbage unless you get stupid lucky, I fully agree with your buddy on the foam boards.
