The expensive torque wrench I swore was overkill finally proved its worth

I've been tightening bolts by feel for 15 years and always laughed at guys dropping $400 on digital torque wrenches. Last month I took a job in Boise redoing a deck where the old lag screws had stripped out completely because someone overtightened them. I rented a digital model for a weekend and the difference was night and day, especially on the softer cedar where spec was 45 ft-lbs. The audible beep at the exact setting saved me from second-guessing every single fastener. I still think most hobbyists don't need one, but on a paying job with a warranty, it's just dumb not to use the right tool. Has anyone else had a big purchase they fought off for years that finally made sense? Or is it still overrated in your book?

The bit about second-guessing every fastener is exactly what happened to my buddy Mike when he rebuilt his boat trailer. He spent years just cranking lug nuts with a breaker bar and a prayer, swore torque wrenches were for engineers and snobs. Then one wheel bearing seized on the highway because he over-torqued it by like 30 ft-lbs. After that, he borrowed my cheap beam-style one and now he won't even touch a spark plug without checking the spec. He still complains about the cost but says the peace of mind is worth it, especially with the trailer hauling his fishing boat every weekend.
