Update: I was wrong about the $80 moisture meter

Thought it was just a gimmick for upselling. Used it on a basement job in Akron last month, found a leak behind drywall we would've missed. Anyone else have a tool they doubted that saved a job?

Man, I've been there. That hidden moisture turns into mold real fast, especially in a basement. We opened up a wall last year that felt dry, but the meter showed 90% inside. The framing was already starting to rot. Trust the numbers, not just your gut.

@the_wesley I gotta push back on that "dries out on its own" idea. In a basement with no airflow that moisture just sits there. I saw a job where a guy let a small leak go for two months thinking it would dry out and ended up ripping out half his drywall because the mold spread behind the baseboards. Those meters aren't ghost hunting they're catching stuff before you need a hazmat suit.

Found a leak behind drywall" sounds bad, but was it actually causing major damage yet? Sometimes that moisture would dry out on its own before it ever became a real problem. Those meters can make you chase ghosts.
