Appreciation post: how my client's hair changed texture after 6 months of going sulfate-free
I've been telling people for years that sulfates wreck curly hair but nobody listens. Finally had a client who agreed to ditch her regular shampoo and use only low-poo products for a full 6 months. The before and after difference is wild - her 3B curls went from frizzy mess to actual defined ringlets with way less breakage. She used to need heavy gels and creams just to tame the fluff, now her hair holds moisture naturally. I think the real game changer was cutting out the sodium lauryl sulfate that was stripping her scalp. Has anyone else seen a similar switch work for their clients?

Yep, this is real science not just hype. Sulfates like SLS are basically dish soap for your scalp, they strip everything including the natural oils curly hair needs to stay flexible. Once you remove that constant drying out, the cuticle can finally lay flat instead of sticking up and causing frizz. The fact that she needed less heavy products after 6 months proves her moisture barrier actually started working again. A lot of people give up after 2 weeks because their scalp goes through a weird grease phase, but sticking it out for 3 to 6 months is where the real change happens. Thats when you see the curl pattern bounce back and the breakage drop off because the hair isnt being chemically beaten down every wash day.

My cousin actually went through this exact thing last year with her 3C curls. She stuck it out for like 5 months and her hair went from a frizzy mess to these defined coils I couldn't believe it. The weird part was she had to switch from mousse to just water and a little aloe vera gel because everything else was too heavy. But she told me the first month was brutal, her scalp felt like an oil slick and she almost quit twice. Now she can go a full week between washes and her hair looks better than it ever did with all those expensive products. I keep thinking about trying it myself but my hair is wavy not curly so I'm not sure.

Wavy hair is such a gamble with this stuff though, I've heard it either works miracles or turns into a grease bomb with no in-between. My hair can't even decide if it's wavy or just confused so I'd probably end up with both somehow.
