Can we talk about sectioning hair vs just grabbing chunks?

I had two clients last week with similar cuts, one I sectioned carefully and the other I just grabbed sections quick. The sectioned one came out even and balanced, the other one had uneven layers I had to fix. I use the same shears and same technique on both, but the prep made the whole difference. Do you guys section every time or just wing it when you're in a rush?

Did you notice a huge time difference between sectioning and just grabbing?

My last "wing it" haircut ended up looking like a staircase had a fight with a lawnmower, so I feel your pain. I used to think sectioning was just something you did for Instagram videos until I had to fix a "just grabbed" haircut that took me an extra forty five minutes to even out. Now I section every time, even for a basic trim, because my ADHD brain needs that structure or I'll forget one side exists and give someone a mullet. My shears are the same no matter what, but my hands are clearly not, because without sections my layers look like I closed my eyes and prayed. It's honestly like the difference between baking a cake with a measuring cup versus just dumping ingredients in and hoping for the best. I'll take the extra five minutes of sectioning over another apology text any day.
