Hot take: I watched a stylist in Dallas prep a client's hair for 40 minutes before she even picked up the scissors
Stopped by a salon in Dallas last month to watch a friend work and the stylist at the next chair did something I can't shake. She spent a full 40 minutes just sectioning, checking growth patterns, and talking through the cut before she ever grabbed her shears. I always thought that was overkill, like let's just get to it. But the client sat there totally calm, and the cut came out clean on the first pass with zero fixing after. Meanwhile I'm over here doing 15 minute consults and wondering why I get so many folks coming back unhappy with the shape. Has anyone else changed up how long they spend on the consult part, and did it mess with your booking times at all?
Spending 40 minutes before shears even come out sounds crazy until you think about what she's actually doing. She's not just sectioning, she's mapping the whole head so every cut after that has a plan behind it. That upfront work is probably why the cut landed clean on the first pass instead of needing fixes. I bet if you stretched your 15 minute consult to 25 or 30, you'd spend less time on corrections later in the chair, which evens out the booking time anyway.
