I bought a $40 'professional' thermal styling brush from an online ad and it literally melted a chunk of my client's hair.
Has anyone found a truly reliable brand for hot tools that won't fail catastrophically on fine hair?

Blame the tool, not the hair. That cheap brush was a disaster waiting to happen with its awful temperature control. Good tools just don't do that if you use them right.

Nancy_davis has a point about cheap tools, but even the best brush can fry hair if someone isn't paying attention. You can't just set it on high heat and zone out, you have to keep it moving. Skill and knowing your own hair type matter way more than the price tag sometimes. A lot of damage comes from user error, not just faulty equipment. It's easier to blame the tool than admit we might have rushed the process or used the wrong setting.

I get your point but good tools still shouldn't hit random high temps.
