Unpopular opinion: keratin treatments are way overhyped for most hair types
I kept hearing how keratin would save every frizzy head, so I finally tried it on a client last month. Turns out, the stats from a 2023 survey by Professional Beauty Association say 68% of clients with fine hair ended up with damage or breakage within 6 months. I found that number buried in a trade article about ingredient safety. Don't get me wrong, they work great for coarse, thick hair in my experience. But for the average person with medium density hair, I think we push these as a fix-all too much. Has anyone else seen more split ends or thinning after doing these treatments on clients?

Pretty much same experience here. I did keratin on a friend last year who has fine wavy hair and within 3 months her ends looked like straw. I stuck to a mild smoothing treatment instead and she's way happier now. The strong stuff just isn't worth it for most people who don't have really thick coarse hair. I've seen way more clients come back with breakage than any actual improvement when they push for the full keratin. It's become this trend where everyone thinks they need it but their hair just can't handle it.

Yeah, totally agree. I jumped on the keratin train with a fine-haired client last spring and her hair was a mess by August, split ends everywhere and way less volume than she started with.
