I was driving past the old steel mill site in Gary last week and saw a mobile crane on tracks instead of rubber tires.
It made me think about how we used to have to build a whole timber mat road for a rig like that to move 20 feet on a muddy site.

Yeah, that slow travel speed @the_ben mentioned. How much extra time does it really add to a job compared to building a road?

Track rigs are a game changer for soft ground. You still see the big timber mats around, but those crawlers can just walk right across a muddy site. Saves a whole day of work just setting up a road. The downside is they move slow as anything when they're traveling. But for precision work in one bad spot, you can't beat them.
