My main hoist cable snapped on a job in Nashville last Tuesday

I was lifting a 12-ton HVAC unit up to a rooftop and about halfway through the lift I heard this loud pop. The cable just gave out near the drum and the whole load came crashing down onto the flatbed truck below. Luckily nobody was standing nearby but it tore up the truck bed pretty bad. I had to shut down the whole site for two hours while we got a replacement cable and inspected everything. Has anyone else had a cable snap like that out of nowhere or was I just pushing my luck with an older line?

Ever noticed how everything just gives out at the worst possible time? Like my car's serpentine belt picked a highway on ramp to snap last month.
