PSA: Old crane hand in Tacoma taught me the hand signal I was giving wrong for 6 years
Was booming down on a tilt-up wall pour last Thursday and this retired operator named Dale walked up and said my stop signal looked like a slow down from the cab. He stood there and made me run it 4 times until my fist snapped closed fast, then just nodded and walked off. Any of you ever find out years in that one signal you swore was right has been reading different to the guy in the seat?
That bit about your fist having to snap closed fast is where I'd push back a little. Old timers love to make you repeat a signal till it matches the way they were taught, but a slow close and a quick close look the same from 80 feet up in a cab with a dirty windshield. The real fix is a radio or a spotter who knows your habits, not four reps in the dirt.
