Got stuck choosing between rewriting the whole first chapter or keeping it as is

I had this fantasy story sitting for 6 months where the main character wakes up in a strange forest with no memory. I couldn't decide if I should scrap the first 20 pages and start fresh or just push through and edit later. I went with rewriting and honestly after 3 hours I had something way better but now I'm second guessing if I wasted my time. Has anyone else ever shredded a whole opening only to wonder if the original was fine?

Did you save the original version somewhere so you can compare them side by side later?

Nah, of course I didn't save it. That would've been the smart thing to do, and I pretty much never do the smart thing until it's way too late. Now I'm stuck trying to remember what I originally wrote while staring at this mess I created. Real professional over here, just winging it and hoping for the best.
