Got stuck on a fantasy story and tried a random object generator

I was writing a scene in my book set in a magic shop in Seattle and couldn't figure out what my main character should find. I used a website called Fantasy Name Generators and clicked on their 'Magical Item' button. It gave me 'a compass that points to your greatest regret,' which totally fixed my plot problem. What's a good tool you've used to jumpstart a stalled idea?

My greatest regret is reading this post.

Honestly I got stuck on a short story last month and just started looking at weird stuff in my own house. I found an old broken watch and wrote a whole scene about a ghost trapped in the gears. Sometimes the best thing is just the junk on your desk, a weird button or a cracked mug, it can spark something way more personal than a generator. That compass idea is cool though, might steal that for a side character's curse.

Ever try using a random word generator for a character's secret motivation?
