Just realized it took me 8 months to figure out a simple character voice problem
I kept trying to write this detective character and he sounded like a robot from a manual. Finally after 8 months I read some old transcripts from the NYPD detective interviews on YouTube and bam, I got it. He was supposed to talk like a guy who's seen too much and doesn't care about grammar. Has anyone else spent forever on something that simple and felt dumb after?

Last week I would have said just write and fix it later. But reading this changed my mind. Good process work is about noticing what you don't see.

@king.kevin that line about noticing what you don't see really stuck with me. I used to think good writing meant catching all the typos and bad grammar, but I realized later it's more about the stuff you never thought to check. For me, it was always missing the flow between paragraphs, like the reader needed a bridge I didn't build. Ever had that moment where you read something back and wonder how you skipped the obvious gap?
