Just realized 'write what you know' might be holding writers back
Most teachers push 'write what you know' to make stories feel real! But I think it can actually hold back new writers from trying cool fantasy or sci-fi ideas. Some say starting with what you know builds a strong foundation first. What's your take on this debate?

Wait, it's about writing feelings you know, not microwaves.

Honestly, that whole "write what you know" thing gets taken way too literally. It just means make the feelings real, not the kitchen appliances. People get so hung up on the wrong part.

I tried so hard to follow that advice, and my first sci-fi story had characters debating alien politics while using a microwave. I clearly only 'knew' my sad studio apartment. It can make you force boring, real-world stuff into places it doesn't fit just to feel 'authentic'. Sometimes you gotta write what you love and research the rest.
