Showerthought: I thought those one word prompt challenges were lazy until a Tuesday night at my kitchen table
Six months ago my writing group in Portland tried one of those single word prompt nights and I almost skipped it because I figured a prompt that short couldn't give me anything to work with. The word was "harbor" and I sat there for 20 minutes just staring at my notebook feeling dumb while everyone else scribbled away. Then I stopped trying to be clever and wrote about my uncle's boat shed on the coast, the smell of old rope, the way he'd tap the hull twice before locking up for the night. Two hours later I had 1,800 words and the bones of a short story that later got picked up by a tiny literary zine out of Tacoma. The weird part is the vague prompts pushed me harder than the detailed ones, because I had to build the whole world myself instead of just following directions. My group still does detailed prompts most weeks and I notice my work comes out flatter when the prompt hands me too much. So I'm curious, do you all get more out of tight prompts with lots of rules or the one word kind that leave everything open?
