Tried writing my villain's backstory as a series of text messages and it actually clicked

I was stuck for weeks on why my antagonist was so angry, but drafting it as a fragmented chat log with his brother from 2018 made his motives feel real. Anyone have other weird formats that helped you unlock a character?
