Update: my old writing group passed a hat and nobody wrote fiction, they wrote grocery lists
I went back to my old writing group in Columbus after 3 years away, and the prompt was simple, describe a door. Back in 2019, we would have gotten 12 wild stories about haunted doors or doors that lead to other worlds. This time, 8 people wrote about their front door, the door to their garage, or a door they needed to fix. I asked why, and one guy said he just did not have the energy to make anything up after work. That hit me. We are so tired that even our made up stories want to be true. I think that is why so many prompts flop now, they ask for big imagination when people just want to write down what they see. Is it just my group, or are your prompts getting more real and less wild too?
We started doing a warmup where people just list what they saw on the way over, no making stuff up allowed. Sounds boring but it loosens everyone up and the wild stories come back on their own. Low key the trick is giving people permission to be tired first.
