Got weird looks eating lunch in a Tokyo park - turns out walking while eating is rude there

I was munching on a convenience store onigiri while strolling through Ueno Park and this elderly lady actually stopped and gestured for me to stand still. Had no idea that eating on the move is considered bad manners in Japan, so now I always find a bench first. Anyone else accidentally break a cultural norm while traveling?

Japan's big on not eating while walking because it's seen as messy and disrespectful to shop owners who want you to eat at their place. Did the same thing in Kyoto with some takoyaki, got the death stare from a salaryman. Now I just stand next to a vending machine like a normal person.

Respectfully, I see it a little different. I ate okonomiyaki walking around Osaka and nobody blinked an eye. Maybe it depends on the area or the food, you know?
