I just realized I've been avoiding a whole side of my family history for no good reason

For years, I never asked my dad about his side of the family. My mom's side was always the one we talked about at holidays, and I just went along with it. The tip-off came last month when my cousin from my mom's side mentioned a town in Germany where my dad's family is from. I realized I didn't even know the name. So I finally asked my dad over coffee. He got quiet, then told me his grandfather left that town because of something that happened there, something the family never speaks about. He said it's considered bad luck to even bring it up. It's not a secret, just a deep cultural silence. I spent my whole life respecting a taboo I didn't even know was there. Has anyone else stumbled into a family silence like this, where the rule is just 'we don't talk about that'?

Isn't it wild how these things just get passed down? @campbell.evan's buddy and your story show how the quiet becomes the rule. You end up following a ghost of a reason without even knowing why.

That "deep cultural silence" thing reminds me of a buddy who found out his great-uncle was basically exiled from their village.

That kind of family secret leaves a real mark, doesn't it? It's like a hole in the story you thought you knew. Makes you wonder what else gets buried just to keep things quiet. Your buddy's story is a perfect example of how that silence works. Those old choices just echo down through the generations. Really heavy stuff to sit with.
