I thought my grandma was exaggerating about not talking about money at family dinners, then I saw it happen in Manila
My lola always said you never bring up salary or debt at the table, and I figured it was just an old habit. Last month at my cousin's place in Manila, an uncle asked how much a nephew made at his new call center job, and the whole room went quiet for maybe 10 seconds before someone changed the subject to the neighbor's dog. My cousin later explained that in Filipino families, asking about money is basically saying you think someone owes you or you're judging them, and it can start fights that last months. I was raised here in the States where people ask that stuff casually, so seeing it live really threw me. Has anyone else had a moment where a family rule you dismissed as silly turned out to be a real thing?
