Just hit me how taboo it is to talk about divorce in my community

My aunt split from her husband years ago, but we still act like it never happened (it's so strange). This silence means my cousins have no one to ask about their feelings, and it's just sad.

Wait they still set a place for him at Christmas? That's wild. @abbyc33's family is really acting like he's just running late from the store. The silence just makes the whole thing weirder for the kids.

Watch my family tip toe around my uncle's divorce like it's a sleeping bear at a picnic. We'll still set a place for him at Christmas dinner but whisper his name like it's a bad word. My little cousin asked why dad lives in an apartment now and my aunt just started loudly asking about homework. Guess we're all just waiting for the memo that says it's okay to say the D word out loud.

How do families get so weird about simple facts? I used to believe ignoring hard stuff was the kindest way, but watching my own family do the same dance taught me that quiet just makes the whole thing feel like a secret shame instead of life happening.
