My buddy from Nigeria was shocked I eat pork chops in front of my dog

I was grilling in the backyard last Saturday and my friend, who's Igbo Christian, saw me toss a pork chop bone to my golden retriever. He looked horrified. Turns out in his village, especially the older generation, feeding dogs meat is seen as disrespectful to ancestors or something. Dogs are considered scavengers there, not family members. I had no idea that was even a thing. I've been giving my dog bacon bits for years without thinking twice. Has anyone else run into a totally random food taboo like this from another culture?

Gotta say I see it a little different though. I mean dogs literally evolved eating scraps from humans and meat is totally fine for them nutritionally. Sounds like a respectful cultural thing on his end but I don't think it's disrespectful to treat your dog like family.
