My grandma's neighbor in rural Alabama wouldn't let me drink from her water fountain back in '97

I was 8 and visiting for the summer, and she told me straight up 'that's for white folks' when I reached for the outdoor spigot. It's wild to think how normal that felt to her even then. Anyone else have a moment where a simple thing like a drink turned into a look at old customs?

Nah, you're overreacting. People back then were just cautious about strangers and outsiders, not everything was about race. She probably didn't want some random kid from out of town messing with her stuff.

Oh man it's like that thing where people always give the benefit of the doubt to the one in power instead of the kid.
