My grandmother's recipe box taught me more than the internet did

Last month my aunt mailed me this old recipe box from the 1950s. Every card has coffee stains and handwritten notes in the margins, like 'add more salt if using canned tomatoes' and 'don't tell mom I cut the butter in half.' The weird thing is, my great-grandma's handwritten notes about cooking during rationing explain more about post-war food taboos than any article I've read. Has anyone else gone through old family papers and found stuff that made more sense than what you learned in school?

Check the margins of old cookbooks for the real history, school never mentions that stuff. My grandma wrote "shorten the war" next to a pie recipe.
